seeking self enlightenment

QUICK RECHARGE

self enlightenment exercise no. 1

When you have finished reading these words, close your eyes for a few seconds and become aware of the forms of light that you see in your mind. As you do this, your eyes rest and you enjoy a relaxing break from the visual demands of everyday life.

When you open your eyes, imagine that you are seeing the world in front of you for the very first time.

NOTES
Do this exercise whenever you feel stressed and in need of a very short moment of relaxation.  It is also an easy reminder of the beauty and wonder of the world we live in.

Please post a comment or question below about how you got on with this exercise. I will gladly post a reply.

If this exercise helped you with stress, listen to this 4 minute meditation for total stress relief

Starfire's Gravatar Hi Richard - I've been a Meditainment member for quite a while, but I didn't realise you had a blog!

I quite enjoyed this exercise - I especially liked that it was something I could practice 'in the moment', rather than having to take myself away from the keyboard and into a 'meditation space' for a defined period of time.

Interestingly enough, I don't see 'blobs of light' so much as I see 'blobs of dark' - or at least I did when I tried it this time. I'm curious to see what I get next time I try.

Blessings

nora cameron's Gravatar Richard, I've tried this exercise but I see grey squares more than forms of light. Is that normal too? Thanks, nora
# By nora cameron | 21/07/08 14:30
Richard Latham's Gravatar Hi Nora,
Thanks for your question.
These grey squares you see are probably a kind of image carried over from looking at the computer screen. However, sometimes you might see grey squares anyway, even if you have not been looking at a screen. There are a variety of shapes anyone might see as well as the blobs mentioned in the exercise. It is all down to the way the brain decides to interpret the signals from the eyes. I would not know what certain shapes or images would mean. It would make an interesting area for research though. All the best Richard

Chantal's Gravatar Hi Richard,

I came across this site a while back when I was extremely tense and in a very stressful and depressive state. I tried it a few times and thought it certainly helped calm me down but then things got worse I and more or less forgot about the site. Today I thought to stop by and well I saw red and no shapes...does that mean anything?

This is a great site and so helpful, when that quick fix is needed thank you so much!!!

Beth's Gravatar Hello Richard! I'm a new visitor to the site and am curious about what these exercises can do. I also want to know what I do if I don't really see anything but darkness. Any help?

Beth
# By Beth | 10/08/08 07:45
Richard Latham's Gravatar Hi Beth,
Thanks for your question. If you complete these exercises, you will notice subtle and positive changes in the way you engage in life. Don't worry about only 'seeing darkness' it would suggest you are feeling deeply relaxed.

RAVI's Gravatar Hi Richard...

I did the exercise but what I saw was all blackness and not blobs of light but very soon the blackness turned into blue and redish again black. What and why is this change in colours ? At present I am suffering from sever low back pain and tremendous mental stress and tensions. I am sure meditation will definitely reduce this tress and tensions and ultimately relief from low back pain.

Thank you much.
# By RAVI | 14/08/08 06:36
Richard Latham's Gravatar Hi Ravi,
I wouldn't know why there was a change in colours for you, but its interesting to read what everyone is 'seeing' so thanks for your post.

I am sorry to hear about your suffering under severe back pain. I strongly recommend you listen to this Pain Relief Meditation
http://www.meditainment.com/natural-pain-relief/
It is unlikely to completely end the pain, but you will find it less bothersome and easier to manage. This will also provide some relief for your mental stress. All the very best of good fortune with this. Please let us know how it goes for you.

Rene's Gravatar Hey Richard...this is my first time to this website, and I find it very informative. Saw dots of light when I tried this exercise. Going through a painful time in my life right now, my partner of 13 years is moving on, and I don't want to let her go. Doing a lot of praying and visualizing for a better future. Thanks for your website and thank you for putting your time into it. God bless you.
# By Rene | 06/09/08 17:27
Richard Latham's Gravatar Hi Rene,
Pleased the website is helping you at this very difficult time. A break up with a partner, is extremely unpleasant, especially for the party that wants to keep the relationship. I hope it all works out well for you both, whether in a seperated or reunited future. Richard

Paula Luaces's Gravatar Richard,

I had noticed those forms of light before but I had never used them as a way of relaxation. I always assumed they were my eyes responding to external light filtering in, previous scenes and even blood vessels.

I am looking at them in a new light mow(pun intended)

I love how easy yet effective this is!

jade's Gravatar That was totally wild! I cannot believe I have had this wonderful experiential resource right here in of all places my head for my whole life and never before experienced it like that. The exercise demonstrated to me just how remarkably easy it is to change one's reality.

Cheryl Saunders's Gravatar I see only darkness.i have been studing the Silva method for 9wks. now and have not been able to experience anything.could i be blind in my in my inner eye.I believe in esp an fear the unknown.I have had many experiences, but got nothing from her lessons.
# By Cheryl Saunders | 16/10/08 01:10
Richard's Gravatar Hi Cheryl,
Thanks for your comment and question.
Don't worry if you only see darkness, about a third of people have this. When this exercise works, all you see is a kind of 'background illumination' which are the messages your eyes continue to send to your brain, in the absense of light. The way you interpret these is of some significnace, but it sounds like you are just set to ignore them, which is no bad thing. Richard

Geoff's Gravatar Unfortunately I didnt see or imagine anything (no colours)
# By Geoff | 04/11/08 13:58
joe's Gravatar when i closed my eyes, i saw a kaleidoscope of color which eventually formed one broad stroke of mono color and then that gradually evaporated into a formless gray landscape. i took that all to mean a jumble of inputs or stimulus to a softening of the noise (mono color) to nondescript gray reflective of greater calm and less distraction.

Patty's Gravatar Hello Richard,
Thank you. It is snowing here in Northern Rhode Island (USA) and I was sitting by the window with one of my kitties Freddie. Generally I do not see too much behind my eyes when I meditate so was not surprised to see just the usual black and white "lights" as my visual cortex calmed - but when I opened my eyes my little Fred was right there and I had the most wonderful surge of pure love. I work a lot so a bit of break is a good idea to keep me fresh. Thank you, I learned yet another method to refresh! Bless you. I do love the meditations.

Tom Banks's Gravatar Hi Richard

I found the exercise very relaxing and refreshing. I have ten children living with me and my wife. 9 are grandchildren whose mother passed away three and a half years ago. I work ten hour days and come home most days really tired. Usually I can't calm down. Now I use this exercise and am dealing much better with all the chaos.

Thanx

Chantal's Gravatar I just got a very stressful email re pending divorce, which left me feeling way way too angry. Then a little while later after basking in anger and general negativity I recieved a message from this website regarding a comment that had been made recently - "nice post" - ofcourse I clicked on the link and then I read my post from a long long time ago and thought this message could not have come at a better time!

So I tried it but I can't concentrate - I'm just too angry to focus really, so I'm guessing the dark dark orange...red ...is maybe not a good thing? Some insight would be great. What does this mean?

Totally stressed
C
