THE SOUND OF PEACE

self enlightenment exercise no. 22

As you read this, focus on some of the individual letters that form these words.   Notice how each letter is a white shape that stands out from the blackness of the screen you read from.

While you continue to read, listen carefully to what you are hearing.

Can you make out the background humming of your computer?
What other sounds can you hear in the immediate space around you?

Now listen only to the sounds that come from the greatest distance.
Spend some time trying to identify each distant sound as it occurs.

And there it is!
…in those moments of quietness between them:  the sound of peace.

NOTES
The sound of peace can be found everywhere, but it is rarely noticed in the hustle and bustle of daily life.  I need some help describing this sound of peace, so a description of what you ‘heard’ will be much appreciated if entered below.

Comments :
Susie Harris's Gravatar I heard birdsong, not just any bird, it was one of the most beautiful sounds I have heard in my alley.
The bird was sitting high on a television antenna (soon to be defunct) and was so melodious several neighbors gathered to listen. Then I heard the sound of gratitude.
My city neighborhood is often so loud I need to run a fan to create white noise.
I do listen for birds, often the only joyful sound in a stressed out city.

Anne's Gravatar above the computer's hum I am aware of the wuzzing in my ears of my heartbeat as it pumps the blood round my body. The faint drone of cars on the road outside. Above all I feel silence surround me rather than hear it!

Peter's Gravatar When you concentrate on your breathing, there is a point after breathing out and short before the body itself breath in with total silince. I love that way to controll my feelings and kill stress immediately.
cheers,
Peter

Jono's Gravatar I hear the sound of me air condition humming away...along with the sound of a wee doberman pincher eating a middle aged man alive outside. The blood curdling screams ahhh so relaxing...the angry growls are so soothing...

Richard Latham's Gravatar Hi Jono,
Golly sounds like this exercise was a disaster for you. If you see this, please try again, hopefully the audioscape outside gives the sound of peace a chance to be heard, this time.
Thanks for the post though, LOL
Richard

Michaiel's Gravatar The sound of stillness in the air, is so peaceful for me. It is 2:20 AM and the neighborhood is quiet.

I've heard a quote that goes, "A hush more quiet then stillness."
